One of the busiest areas at the Center is the Clothing Department.
The ladies section carries all sizes , small through plus sizes. We have outerwear, casual clothes, dressy clothes, sleepwear, undergarments, and we even have scrubs. There are accessories such as hats, belts, jewelry and scarves.
Likewise, the men’s area has casual and dress clothes; accessories include caps, ties and belts. The children’s section has all types of clothing and footwear for infants through teens. Generic uniforms are always in demand. Thanks to the work of a couple of our volunteers, there are pre-packaged layette sets that are thoughtfully packaged; it includes lots of baby items – clothing, bedding, a toy or two – many things to welcome a newborn. We also carry diapers and wipes for all sizes.
There are racks and racks of clothes, and dozens of shelves in the main room and even a separate room to store men’s and ladies shoes as well as all the dressy clothes that are appropriate for job interviews, or perhaps for church or a special event.
We take in a huge amount of donations each week, and sorting it takes many hands. There are several We take in a huge amount of donations each week, and sorting it takes many hands. (We call them the Clothing Fairies). Many of our new workers start in the clothing area – it’s a good place to start as you can meet others and learn about what goes on at the Center. Some move on to other roles, but many are dedicated workers that have been sorting clothes for years. It’s a very social area – they always have lively conversations and lots of laughter as they do their work.
When we are asked about restrictions on donations, we explain that we prefer to take in clothes appropriate for the current season, as we don’t have room to store off-season clothes. We remind people that yes! We take underwear! We are fussy that clothes be clean and in good condition; if we receive items that aren’t, we send them to Salvation Army, and they can sell them in bulk for rags.
Special Need of the Week – Winter clothes are not needed at this time. Think Spring! We are especially low on kids things, sizes 2 through 5.
