As October is coming to an end, we will be gearing up for our holiday projects. Each year, we offer beautiful holiday baskets to many of our guests. Thanks to our donors, we typically are able to provide the fixings for Thanksgiving dinner to 80 – 100 of families (depending on how many donors we have.) We are currently interviewing guests that visit us to select the recipients for this year; we choose families that have not received a dinner from us in the past few years. We encourage the guests from small households to invite a couple friends or neighbors to join their family for dinner.
For years, we have been fortunate enough to receive baskets from each classroom at St Mary School, as well as School and Parish Office staff, St Mark School, St Mark Columbiettes, UNCW students, the Senior Singles, as well as several private donors.
The basket typically contains a turkey with all the fixings: stuffing mix, gravy mix, cranberry sauce, fresh fruits (apples, oranges, bananas) and fresh vegetables (potatoes, onions, celery) , canned corn, beans, and chicken broth, bread, butter, milk, a pie and more. We ask for fresh fruits and vegetables because most of those we serve live on canned food year round.
This year, we’ll be asking our donors to bring us their baskets by the morning of November 21 and we will be distributing them that day. Many of our guests will come in to pick up their basket however, we offer free delivery service to anyone that needs it.
If you are interested in donating a basket or in helping distribute them on November 21, please contact me.
Special Need of the Week: Next week will be Share Sunday. Consider bringing in non-perishable food donations to Mass to help fill our pantry shelves!
