My Dear Friends,
In today’s selection from the Gospel of St. Matthew (22: 34-40), some Pharisees asked Jesus which of the commandments was the greatest. Jesus answered by saying, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” This is called the Triple Love Command of Jesus, the foundation of how we are to behave. Unfortunately, many people – including preachers who should know better – forget the third part of the triple love commandment, i.e., the love of self.
This Sunday, we celebrate Priesthood Sunday in the United States of America. The day is designed to honor ordained priests and their service for the Church.
This Sunday is also National World Youth Day in the United States, a day set aside to honor our youth and those who serve them. Because of this, our parish devotes much energy to serving and nurturing this community. Did you know that 70% of all Catholics in the USA ages 35 and under are Hispanic? We honor our youth for they are our future.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
– Father Bob
