We’ve been really busy the last few weeks; we are seeing larger volumes of people each day.  I’ve had several people contact me regarding volunteer opportunities and I’m glad to have them – we certainly need more help to handle the increased numbers of guests.

We are currently looking into a few new opportunities to be able to expand the services we provide to our guests.  This past summer, one of my volunteers brought a new grant to my attention. It was for a program called “Broadway for a Better World”, a partnership between the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover and Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center that provides free tickets to shows to nonprofit groups in New Hanover and Pender counties, the area CFCC serves. The mission of this program is to make the theater experience and all of its associated benefits available to underserved populations, especially the youth and the elderly, in the Cape Fear area.

I frequent the Wilson Center quite often, and I was intrigued by the idea to be able to offer this opportunity to some of our guests who might never be able to attend an event there; my volunteer and I submitted the application, and I’m very pleased to say we have been awarded ten tickets to the performance of Blue Man Group in May.  We look forward to gathering a group of guests to attend the performance.

This past week, I met with a gal from UNCW who is in charge of placements for interns in the Social Work program. I gave her a full tour (I love giving tours – visitors are always amazed to see our facility) and she was duly impressed.  I explained the details of our program and she thought we’d be a perfect fit for the intern program and I agreed. It will be a great help to me, while it certainly will give the students great hands on experience.

We are always open for ideas for improvement; if you have any knowledge of grants we should pursue or any other suggestions, feel free to share them with me. Likewise, contact me if you’d like a tour!
